Why Automechanika 2026 Matters for Locksmiths and ECU Specialists
Automechanika Frankfurt opens its doors from September 8–12, 2026, and this year the message for independent workshops is unusually clear: OEM lockouts are accelerating, but so are the tools that defeat them. The big diagnostic brands are not showing off faster code readers this year. They are showing off ways to keep encrypted, certificate-protected jobs in-house instead of handing them back to dealers.
The event carries extra weight in 2026 because the aftermarket has reached an inflection point. Volkswagen Group has pushed its IMMO 5C and 5D immobilizer generations across most of its lineup, Mercedes has wrapped coding behind digital certificates, and Stellantis has locked active diagnostics behind a Secure Gateway. Every one of these moves was designed to pull revenue back toward the dealership. The Automechanika announcements are, in effect, the independent sector's answer.
Abrites is one of the names worth watching at the show. Its Automechanika lineup is built almost entirely around bypassing OEM restrictions on modern immobilizer and ECU platforms. For a locksmith or ECU specialist who has been turning away recent Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, or Stellantis work, the announcements are a practical roadmap rather than marketing noise.
VAG: Breaking the IMMO 5C and 5D Barrier
The headline for VAG specialists is independent coverage of the highly encrypted IMMO 5C and IMMO 5D generations. Abrites is demonstrating all-keys-lost (AKL) on IMMO 5C and key-adding on IMMO 5D — without extracting synchro bytes and without a restricted dealer portal connection.
For technicians, that removes the two bottlenecks that have historically pushed modern Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, and Škoda work back to the main dealer. Using the ZN085 RH850/V850 programmer, the toolchain extracts CS, MAC, VIN, and PIN directly from the processor dump. That opens up AKL on MQB dashboards, cluster calibration, and module adaptation on the newer MEB electric platforms under one roof. If your shop already carries a key programmer for VAG work, this is the coverage gap it has been missing.

Mercedes-Benz: Bypassing Certificate Lockouts
Mercedes has spent the last few years hiding coding and adaptation routines behind digital security certificates, deliberately pushing independent shops out. Abrites is showing a new generation of Mercedes diagnostics that handles these certificate-based lockouts directly.
The practical result is the freedom to do real coding, to personalize donor ECUs and VGS modules, and to adapt FBS4 components without being blocked by an expired or missing OEM certificate. For anyone running Mercedes ECU work or chip tuning, that is the difference between a profitable bench job and a car sent back to the dealer.

French Cars and Stellantis: The SGW Problem, Solved
Stellantis and PSA vehicles sit behind a Secure Gateway (SGW) that blocks active diagnostics and Proxi Alignment. Abrites is demonstrating a full bypass, plus the ability to virginize BSIs and adapt donor engine and transmission controllers — including the Aisin AXN8 (EAT8) TCU — without needing data from the dead original module.
On the Renault and Dacia side, the coverage now reaches the newest platforms (Clio V, Captur II, Megane IV) for both spare-key and all-keys-lost programming. When the OBD port is blocked, the tool extracts the PIN straight from the RH850 processor dump to generate keys. The high-volume Sweet 400 UCH is handled with a plug-and-play routine using the CB012 or CB021 cables, automating the ABS-to-dashboard synchronization disable that turns a complex cluster job into a straightforward one. This applies to the Twingo III, Trafic III, Kwid, Smart 453, Dacia Duster Phase III, and Dacia Spring.
Abrites is also supplying its own keyless key cards for Renault, manufactured and tested in-house in Bulgaria. That sidesteps the cheap aftermarket shells that often fail during programming and leaves you with an OEM-grade part for keyless entry and push-to-start systems at a fraction of the dealership price.
Toyota & Lexus: Keep the Dashboard Intact
The Toyota and Lexus update is the biggest time-saver in the lineup. TN017 resets and adapts the highly secure ID-Code Box directly via LIN-BUS, which means losing all keys on a Toyota no longer requires removing the entire dashboard to reach the module. A multi-day teardown becomes a fast, profitable job, and TN023 extends coverage to the newest 2024/2025 BA, B6, and B9 smart-key architectures.
For a locksmith doing remote keys and key chips, the Toyota ID-Code Box reset alone can pay for the tooling on a handful of jobs.

What This Means for Your Shop
The common thread across every Abrites Automechanika demo is the same: OEMs are adding encryption layers, and the independent aftermarket is answering with processor-level access that keeps those jobs local. None of this is one-click magic — it still requires a diagnostic computer that can read dumps, understand security modules, and adapt donor parts. But the barrier to entry keeps dropping for shops that invest in the right coverage.
