The two solutions — ZF Bus Connect Remote Diagnostics and ZF SCALAR Asset Insights — take live CAN data from a vehicle in operation, push it to the cloud, and turn it into something a technician can act on from a distance.
For independent shops and fleet operators that have watched dealership-level telematics stay locked behind subscription walls, the recognition matters. It signals that connected, predictive diagnostics is becoming a standard expectation rather than a premium add-on.

What ZF's Two Nominated Solutions Actually Do
The first nomination lands in the "Data, Connectivity & Cybersecurity" category. ZF Bus Connect Remote Diagnostics builds on the existing ZF Bus Connect platform and securely bridges a bus's internal CAN network with ZF [pro]Diagnostics. In practice, a technician can remotely access vehicle systems, read detailed diagnostic data, run commands, and receive live responses while the vehicle is still in operation — no physical visit required.
The second, ZF SCALAR Asset Insights, is shortlisted under "Commercial Vehicle & Fleet Innovation." It targets trailers, a segment that has historically been a diagnostic blind spot. The platform takes diagnostic trouble code (DTC) data and turns it into a chronological health history for each trailer. Instead of a one-off fault read, a fleet operator gets a timeline showing how a technical issue developed over time — which lets them separate a one-time glitch from a recurring pattern that signals a real problem.
It is worth noting which category the first nomination landed in. "Data, Connectivity & Cybersecurity" is the same space where the industry's hardest questions now sit: who owns the data coming off a vehicle, how it is secured in transit, and whether independent shops get fair access to it. ZF's pitch is a secure bridge between the vehicle's CAN network and authorized cloud tools, with access control built in rather than bolted on. That framing matters because remote access done wrong is a security risk; done right, it is a productivity unlock.
Together, the two nominations reflect a deliberate pivot: from reactive maintenance — fix it after it breaks — toward predictive, data-driven fleet management. Why Remote Diagnostics Matters for Independent Shops and Fleets
The mechanics of remote diagnostics are not new, but the economics are changing. For years, connected-car data lived behind OEM portals and proprietary dealer tooling. Independent shops were left with whatever a physical multi-brand diagnostic scanner could pull from the OBD2 port during a bay visit. Remote access changes the geometry: a technician can triage a fault before the truck or bus ever rolls into the shop.
That has concrete value for commercial and heavy-duty work, where downtime is measured in lost revenue per hour. A fleet that can surface a failing DPF, a degrading battery, or an intermittent sensor fault from a distance can schedule the repair during a planned window instead of dispatching a tow. For shops, this means fewer emergency callouts and more planned, higher-margin service work. It also means the right tools matter more than ever: the data is only useful if the shop can interpret it, which is why heavy-duty diagnostic tools that read manufacturer-specific commercial-vehicle protocols remain essential even as data moves to the cloud.
There is also a competitive angle. As OEM-adjacent players like ZF push connected diagnostics into the aftermarket, the gap between dealer capability and independent capability narrows. A shop that already runs pre-configured diagnostic laptops with current software can plug into the same data stream and offer near-dealer insight without near-dealer pricing. The technical foundations are already in place: modern commercial vehicles speak DoIP and CAN-FD, and a technician who can read those protocols locally is only a software update away from understanding the same data when it arrives remotely.

Both solutions will be demonstrated at ZF Aftermarket's booth during Automechanika Frankfurt, running September 8–12, 2026. Expect the event to be a showcase for the broader "Mobility Uptime" theme ZF is pushing — connected diagnostics, predictive maintenance, and the software layers that turn raw vehicle data into actionable repair decisions.
For the independent aftermarket, the takeaway is straightforward. Remote diagnostics is no longer a distant OEM exclusive; it is arriving through the same aftermarket channels shops already use. The tools that will matter most are the ones that can both capture local fault data and keep pace with diagnostic software updates as connected protocols and data feeds evolve. Shops that build this capability now — pairing solid diagnostic hardware with current software — will be the ones positioned to take on connected fleet work as it becomes the norm.
