Chip tuning was a term used in the earlier days of automobiles when performance adjustments were made by replacing or modifying the physical chip in the ECU (Engine Control Unit). The chip contained the software and maps that controlled how the engine worked.
ECU remapping is a modern term reflecting that these changes are now often made through software alterations. Instead of physically modifying the ECU or swapping out the chip, technicians connect to the ECU using a computer, altering the software settings to improve engine performance.

Both terms essentially refer to the process of modifying the software that controls the engine in order to increase performance, efficiency, or both. This might involve adjusting the fuel-to-air ratio, ignition timing, or boost pressure in turbocharged engines, among other things.
